Hardship Policy

Mt. Pleasant Public Library
Hardship Policy

The library is not able to allow patrons the opportunity to work off fines or fees. Library staff is already very limited, leaving them no time to supervise those who might want to work off any overdue fees. Library staff may waive overdue fines on a case by case basis. The library also offers an amnesty period each year. Overdue fines will be waived during this time for any patron who comes into the library.

Patrons who owe for lost or damaged items must pay for these items. The library needs the money to replace these items, not the responsibility of supervising untrained help. The library is also not able to allow patrons the opportunity to “trade” personal items in exchange for damaged or lost items. Patrons must pay cash for these items.

Patrons living outside of the Mt. Pleasant City area are required to pay a non-resident card fee. This fee cannot be waived. The library staff is not in a position to determine who would be considered a hardship case and who would not. All items may be used in the library by anyone who comes, whether they have a card or not.

The library is not able to accept community service workers. Patrons wanting to do service projects at the library may be accepted on a limited basis.
