Summer Reading

Brigadeiros (Chocolate Truffles)

Brigadeiro”, which means brigadier, is a favorite party treat in Brazil.  This chocolate confection gets its name from a brigadier general who handed out this treat during his campaign for the presidency of Brazil after World War II.   He did not win his bid for the presidency, and most people would not know his name, but the chocolate delicacy is still going strong.

Brigadeiros are a very common candy made in Brazil.  Brazilians put them in colorful candy papers and use them to decorate at parties.  They are especially common at children’s birthday parties.  They are so easy to make.  In Brazil, the brigadeiro mixture may be found readymade in a can and all you have to do is roll them up in the chocolate sprinkles.

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp margarine

1 can sweetened condensed milk

2 Tbsp cocoa

8 to 10 Oz chocolate sprinkles (about ¾ cup)

Small candy paper cups

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients and put into a medium size sauce pan and cook on medium to low heat.  Stir continuously to avoid burning.   Cook about 15-20 minutes until it boils and thickens.  It will be the consistency of pudding (it thickens more as it cools).  Let the mixture cool and thicken.  Butter your hands and roll into balls about cherry size.  Roll in chocolate sprinkles.  Put in small candy cups.  Makes 25-30 candies.

Hint: An easy way to do this so they don’t stick to your hands is to spoon a small amount directly onto the chocolate sprinkles covering all sides with another spoon.  Once is it covered in sprinkles you can handle it without sticking to your hands. Round it off and put into the candy cups.

After dinner delights…

Ingredients

1 can (395g) condensed milk

1 200g of grated coconut

1 Tbsp soft butter

Use granulated sugar to decorate.

1 Place the condensed milk, grated coconut and butter on a non-stick sauce pan over medium-low heat and  stir vigorously all the ingredients.

2 Cook the mixture until it thickens about 10 to 12 minutes, enough to show the pan bottom during stirring. The consistence will be similar of that of a soux pastry, not too soft.

3 Pour the mixture in a greased dish and let it cool to room temperature. After the mixture has cool down, grease your hands with butter and take small amounts of the mixture with a teaspoon and make 1 ½ inch balls.

4 To finish roll the sweets over granulated sugar, place it in a mini cup cake and decorate.

Makes about 30 sweets

Bel’s tip – Traditionally sticks of clove are used to decorate, but although beautiful not everyone likes the flavor, you could use other cake decorating ingredient like the in the main picture.
